Autumn Red Board & Batten on a Lakewood Road Round Contemporary in North Dartmouth
This Lakewood Road home in North Dartmouth is unlike anything else on the street: a round, silo-shaped contemporary with a rooftop deck and a wide multi-level deck wrapping the ground floor. The curved tower is the whole identity of the house, so the siding had to bend cleanly around that radius without the seams or oil-canning that flat panels would show on a curve. Large windows on the squared wing, white trim, and lattice deck skirting fill out the rest of the elevation.
We installed CertainTeed Board & Batten in Autumn Red. Board and batten runs vertically, alternating wide boards and narrow battens, which is exactly the profile you want on a cylindrical wall: the vertical lines follow the curve and let each board take a slight angle, so the wall reads as one smooth drum instead of a faceted polygon. Autumn Red is a deep barn-red that suits the bold geometry of the house. On a round form this dramatic, a quiet beige would have wasted the architecture, while the red turns the tower into the centerpiece it was built to be.
Wrapping board and batten around a true curve is slow, exacting work. We set a level base line around the full radius, ran each vertical course tight to the next, and stepped the boards around the bend so the battens stayed plumb and evenly spaced the whole way around. The squared window wing, the entry with its arched fanlight, and the horizontal trim band that belts the tower all got clean cut-ins so the new siding runs tight to every edge and transition.
