Charcoal Black Shadow Ridge on an Ewald Avenue Colonial in Marlborough
This Ewald Avenue home in Marlborough is a two-story brick-front colonial with a red-brick facade, navy shutters, and a two-car garage on the left. A tall arched Palladian window lights the entry, and a stone landing and asphalt drive sit below a wooded lot. The main roof planes rise straight off the brick, so the shingle color reads directly against the warm masonry.
We installed CertainTeed Shadow Ridge in Charcoal Black. Charcoal Black is a deep, near-solid charcoal with subtle tonal movement. Against red brick and navy shutters it gives the roof a clean, dark cap that frames the facade and keeps the contrast crisp rather than busy, which suits the formal lines of a brick colonial.
We tore the old roof off down to the deck, replaced any soft sheathing, and ran ice and water shield at the eaves and through the valleys before laying the field. New drip edge went on along the eaves and rakes, the gable returns and the entry roof were flashed into the main slope, and the ridge was capped to match the coursing. On a symmetrical colonial the eave and ridge lines are what the eye checks first, so that is where the asphalt roof replacement had to stay true.
