Coastal Blue Landmark Pro and Velux Skylights on a Beach Hill Road Cape in Harwich
This Beach Hill Road property is a two-story weathered cedar-shake Cape set back in the trees a short walk from the water in Harwich. Natural shingle siding silvered by the salt air, white-trimmed windows, a shed dormer across the upper level, and a steep front gable give it the classic Cape Cod massing. A rear deck, bay window, and white French doors open the back of the house to the yard, and gravel drives wrap both sides. With a roof this steep and this visible from the street and from above, the shingle color carries the whole elevation.
We installed CertainTeed Landmark Pro in Coastal Blue. Coastal Blue is a blue-gray blend with soft slate and driftwood tones that shifts with the light, the kind of color that belongs on a Cape near the water and would look wrong almost anywhere inland. Against silvered cedar shake and white trim, a flat black roof would have gone heavy and a brown would have muddied the cool gray walls. Coastal Blue keeps the whole envelope in the same cool, coastal family, so the new roof reads as part of the house instead of a dark cap dropped on top of it.
We tore the old roof off down to the deck, replaced rotted sheathing, and ran ice and water shield up from the eaves and through every valley before laying the field. A Cape this steep lives and dies on its flashing, so we set new step flashing at every dormer cheek and wall transition, new drip edge along all the eaves and rakes, and tied the ridge cap into the field coursing. This job also included new Velux skylights: we cut and framed the openings, set the units with Velux’s own flashing kits, and wove the ice and water shield around each curb so the glass sits watertight in the slope. The result is a clean asphalt roof replacement with daylight brought into the upper floor.
