Moire Black NorthGate on a Garrison Colonial in Lexington
This Lexington home is a garrison colonial with cream clapboard, black shutters, a dark front door, and an attached garage with a gabled bonus room above it. A fieldstone retaining wall and clipped foundation shrubs line a sloped front lawn. The two main roof planes plus the garage gable carry a lot of visible surface, so the shingle color sets the tone for the whole front.
We installed CertainTeed Landmark NorthGate in Moire Black. NorthGate is an SBS-modified, cold-weather-rated shingle built to stay flexible through hard winters, and Moire Black is a true black with subtle tonal movement. On a cream garrison colonial the black roof gives crisp, classic contrast and pulls in the black shutters and door.
We tore the old roof off down to the deck, replaced any soft sheathing, and ran ice and water shield at the eaves and through the valleys before laying the field. The garage gable and the second-story overhang were flashed into the main slopes, new drip edge went on along the eaves and rakes, and the ridge was capped to match the coursing. With the garage roof tying into the main house, the courses had to line up so the asphalt roof replacement reads as one job.
