Pewterwood Landmark NorthGate on a Country Drive Colonial in Weston
This Country Drive home in Weston is a two-story colonial with light gray clapboard siding, navy shutters, and a symmetrical five-bay front. A brick chimney runs up the left gable and a pedimented portico on slim columns frames the natural wood front door. Foundation plantings and a stone walkway sit below a deep front lawn, with mature trees lining the lot. The two main roof planes carry the whole front, so the shingle color sets the tone for the elevation.
We installed CertainTeed Landmark NorthGate in Pewterwood. NorthGate is an SBS-modified, cold-weather-rated shingle, and Pewterwood is a warm gray blend with brown undertones rather than a flat slate gray. Against the cool gray clapboard and crisp white trim, the warmer roof keeps the elevation from going monochrome and pulls in the brick chimney and the wood-tone front door. On a wide colonial like this, the two long roof planes read as one surface from the street, so a blended gray holds together better than a high-contrast color would.
We tore the old roof off down to the deck, replaced any soft sheathing, and ran ice and water shield at the eaves and through the valleys before laying the field. New drip edge went on along the eaves and rakes, the chimney and the portico roof were flashed into the main slope, and the ridge was capped to match the coursing. The rear of the house carries a sunroom addition and a lower roofline, so the eave lines and tie-ins there had to stay straight for the asphalt roof replacement to look clean from every side.
