Raven Black Patriot XL on a Gambrel Cape in Westford
This Westford home is a gambrel-roofed Cape with blue-gray clapboard, black shutters, white trim, and a brick chimney off one gable. A shed dormer with skylights breaks the front slope and the entry sits up a short run of steps. The gambrel puts most of the roof out where the street sees it, so the shingle color carries the whole front of the house.
We installed CertainTeed Patriot XL in Raven Black. Patriot XL is a durable laminated architectural shingle, and Raven Black is a deep, near-solid black. Against blue-gray walls and black shutters the dark roof pulls the trim together and gives the house a crisp, defined cap that suits the steep gambrel lines.
We tore the old roof off down to the deck, replaced any soft sheathing, and ran ice and water shield at the eaves and through the valleys before laying the field. The dormer cheeks and the skylights were flashed into the front slope, the chimney was step-flashed, new drip edge went on along the eaves and rakes, and the ridge was capped to match the coursing. A gambrel breaks at every rafter, so the steep and shallow pitches had to line up clean for the asphalt roof replacement to read right.
